Do Your Research

Anyone with an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) can be a paid tax return preparer. It is important to ensure your preparer has this number and it should be printed on the return. It is a federal crime for anyone to charge for preparing and filing tax returns for others without a PTIN!

However, tax return preparers have differing levels of skills, education and expertise. Some preparers are attorneys and others are accountants although it is not required by law to prepare taxes and their services are much more suited to individuals with higher than average income, businesses, or unusually complex tax situations as well as much more expensive. In addition, the IRS maintains several programs for tax preparers that include educational and registration requirements. Participation is not required by law to prepare returns and may cost more.

Choosing a tax return preparer wisely is detrimental because the taxpayer is ultimately responsible for all the information on their return, no matter who prepares it for them. Read up on types of preparers at irs.gov:
